Calhan’s Public Library is Open

Calhan Public Library

Calhan is growing! So much so, that Calhan has its own library now. The Calhan Library is part of the Pikes Peak Library District. The Calhan Library’s grand opening was November 4, 2019.

For those of us that love books and magazines, want to check out movies, or need a place to access wireless, this is awesome news. The library will also offer wireless printing. (As of Saturday, 11/16/2019, they still do not have wireless internet access. The employee I spoke to said that they were told it might be another 4 more days or so.)

Location:

600 Bank Street, Calhan Co

Directions: When you are in Calhan’s city limits, Highway 24 is called 5th street. If you are driving east on 5th Street, turn left on Denver Street. This is the street immediately after the street that Woosley’s Grocery store is on. The library is directly behind Woosley’s. You will be able to see it from 5th Street.

The library is occupying the building that used to be Calhan Youth and Recreation Center.

What will you find at the Calhan Library?

In addtion to books and magazines, the Calhan library has:

  • Five computer work stations.
  • A meeting room.
  • A study room.
  • Planned activities
  • Board games that can be checked out for use in the library.
  • Art displays

I couldn’t help but noticing that they have a great collection of Disney movies.

They did a good job of choosing  books for their shelves that would be appeal to people that live in the Calhan area.

For example, I have become very much a country girl that loves the farm and ranch lifestyle. While browsing, I quickly spotted five non-fiction books that I checked out:

  • Reinventing Capitalism in the Age of Big Data by Viktor Mayer-Schonberger and Tomas Ramge
  • Compact Farms by Josh Volk
  • Preppers Pantry by Daisy Luther
  • The Year-Round Solar Greenhouse by Lindsey Schiller
  • Secrets to Great Soil by Elizabeth P Stell

There were lots of other books that do not pertain to gardening, farming or ranching.  I just noticed those because that is what I am interested in.

Although the library’s building is small compared to the libraries located in Colorado Springs,  you can request to check out any book or movie title that the Pikes Peak Library District has. They will bring the book you want to Calhan.

If you check out books from one of the other libraries in the Pikes Libary District, it can be returned in Calhan.

If you live or work in the Calhan area, I recommend you stop in the Calhan Library.

I am also confident the library is going to be a great place for people to visit when they are waiting for their tire to be fixed, their dog to be groomed or just have a few minutes before picking the kids up from school.

Have you been to a public library lately? If not, you may be pleasantly surprised how libraries have evolved and managed to stay relevant.
